R³ Devotional - Day 333

R³ Devotional - Day 333 - 1 Corinthians

By: Anderson Baptist Church

Paul, author of this letter, writes to the church in Corinth. A city that, at that time, was a multicultural place, with people from different places coming for commercial purposes. It was a place of many religions and cultures just mingled together.

During this time, Paul sends this letter addressing different issues within the church, and the first one we find is in these first chapters. There was some division in the church. They were discussing who they should follow at the time, was it Paul’s teachings? Or were they to follow  Apollo’s teachings?

In chapter 3, verse 6, Paul answers this dilemma: “I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave  the growth.” Paul is trying to make the church in Corinth understand that no matter who is preaching, no matter who is leading, we follow Christ, and the leader should also follow Christ.

Nowadays, it is so common to see people following people, following human earthly wisdom instead of following what comes from above. That was also the case for the church in Corinth,  and it was causing division among them. Paul says in chapter 3:22: “Let no one boast in  men…”

People following other people causes division, people following Christ bring unity.

Real: Life Principles
  • Paul writes: “For the wisdom of this world is folly with God” 1 Cor. 3:19. The word of God is sufficient, it’s true, and it’s alive. Worldly wisdom is foolishness compared to it.
  • If we examine ourselves honestly, are we relying on human wisdom or are we relying on his eternal word?

Relevant: Life Applications
  • The church was in division because they were trying to justify men instead of following Christ.  Paul says in chapter 3:11, “no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is  Jesus Christ.”

  • Our foundation is in Christ, not on men. If we let men or worldly ideas lead us, that’s when we’ll start drifting from the body of Christ.

Ready: Life Action Steps
  • Chapter 3 verse 18 “Let no one deceive you…”

  • Be careful who you listen to, who you follow. Our only devotion and direction should be to  Christ and to follow his will.
