R³ Devotional - Day 76
R³ Devotional - Day 76 from Deuteronomy Chapters 17-20
By: Daniel Arguijo
In this passage, we are still reading guidelines and rules about leadership, their judges and future kings, and the social order among the people of Israel. But we find a very important passage in the middle of these chapters.
In chapter 18, verses 15-22, Moses talks about a Prophet that will come from among them. Moses says: “It is to him you shall listen.” So what we must ask ourselves is, is this the Messiah he is talking about? Is this Jesus?
Moses is emphasizing just one prophet, not the multiple prophets we can later see rising in the Old Testament. Moses also uses the phrase “like me.” Moses was spared death as a baby, renounced a royal court, interceded for the people, and was the mediator of the covenant just like Jesus did.
Moses is talking about Jesus, the ultimate prophet the people of Israel will so long await. Before Jesus came to earth, there were 400 years of silence, no prophets were around, and the people of Israel were hungry for God. John 1:21 says the people asked John the Baptist if he was the Prophet, and he said he wasn’t. This prophet was the one who was expected on Moses' words in Deuteronomy. Even more amazing, Jesus himself said in John 5:46 “For if you believed Moses, you would believe in me: for he wrote of me.”
Jesus is the long-expected Messiah Moses wrote about in this passage. This is the prophet they were so eager to hear and to follow. This is Jesus, the Messiah, the savior of the World. The good news is he is also our savior too. And he can be your savior today as well.
