R³ Devotional - Day 86
R³ Devotional - Day 86 Joshua Chapters 16-18
By: Kyle Childress
The Allotment of Land for the Ephraim and Manasseh
As the lands are divided among the 12 tribes of Israel, we see that Joseph’s sons are granted land instead of himself. Ephraim and Manasseh’s allotments are designated in chapters 16-17. An interesting thing happens in verses 14-18 of Chapter 17. Evidentially the “people of Joseph”, mainly Manasseh’s people, complained that their land wasn’t big enough and that the Canaanites still occupied a portion of it. Joshua didn’t back down from his decision but instead challenged them to “finish the job.” God had commanded the Israelites to drive out the Canaanites from the land when he gave them the promised land. (Deut. 7) They had instead, left them to dwell in the land and forced many of them to labor. (Joshua 17:13)
Real Life Principles:
Relevant Life Application:
Many times, we as people jump to the position of complaining about a situation when the answer is right before us. Joshua called the people of Joseph out in their complaining. Their complaint was that they were a “numerous people”. Joshua told them in so many words, “If you are so numerous, then go take the land that has been granted to you!” The people were not willing to put in the work to finish the job that God had called them to. He had already told them they would have success. They had already experienced success. The people had reverted to the same fears that the spies returned with some 40 years before at Kadish-Barnea.
Ready- Life Action Steps:

Real Life Principles:
- God’s promises are forever faithful and true.
- God expects us to follow through on our responsibilities.
- Complaining comes easy – sometimes solutions require work.

Ready- Life Action Steps:
- Remember the promises of God that are found in his word.
- Remember God’s provision that he has shown you and proven through life experiences.
- Be strong and courageous just as the Lord had commanded Joshua in Chapter one of the book of Joshua.
- Pray for God’s strength and power in times of adversity.
