R³ Devotional - Day 62

R³ Devotional - Day 62 from Numbers Chapter 20

By: Lee Dye

Are we so far removed from the Israelites of the Old Testament?  Or Even Moses?  All that God had done for the Israelites, they still complained.  400 years they were enslaved to the Egyptians and cried out to God to free them.   God heard their cries and set them free.  Within a few days of that freedom, they began to complain about their conditions.

They finally got what they asked for, but they wanted more.  There are at least 15 recorded accounts of the Israelites complaining since their release from captivity, beginning in Exodus through Numbers.   In Numbers 20: “4Why have you brought the assembly of the Lord into this wilderness, that we should die here, both we and our cattle? 5And why have you made us come up out of Egypt to bring us to this evil place? It is no place for grain or figs or vines or pomegranates, and there is no water to drink.”.

Are we not happy with what God has given us?  Let’s start with eternal life.   Can you not look around every day and find some joy that God has put before us?   You cannot deny who God is:  “For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.”  Romans 1.20.

And Moses.  God spoke to Moses and instructed him and Aaron to ‘tell’ the rock before their eyes to give water.   Well, just like we get sometimes, Moses had just about enough of all this complaining.   Moses called the people rebels, called them together and said, “must we bring you water”, referring to him and Aaron.  Not mentioning God one time.  Moses walked up to that rock, took his staff and struck it!.  Not once, but two times!

We let our emotions, our sin nature, get the best of us sometimes.  Moses made two mistakes.  First, God never said hit the rock.  Moses was disobedient.  Second, Moses was taking the glory, even if unintentional, instead of allowing God to be glorified.  The severe punishment for Moses was that he was not allowed to enter the promise land.

This rock was symbolic of Christ:  1 Corinthians 10:4 “and all drank the same spiritual drink, for they were drinking from a spiritual rock which followed them; and the rock was Christ.”  When Jesus spoke to the woman at the well in John 4: 13Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, 14but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again”.

Listen closely to what God is telling you.  Pay attention.   Be obedient.   Give Him the glory.  His promise to us is great.  Eternal life, never to thirst again.
