R³ Devotional - Day 72
R³ Devotional - Day 72 from Deuteronomy Chapters 5-7
By: Carole Rinehart
Deuteronomy 5 - Covenant (real)
Moses gathered the people and gave his longest sermon in the book of Deuteronomy. He reminds Israel of who God is and who they are. The LORD talked with you face to face on the mountain from the midst of the fire. Deut 5:4 He restates the commandments and stresses that this covenant is with them, not their ancestors. It was a covenant of the living not the dead. Exodus 20:22
The Mount Sinai experience was not one of sweet fellowship with God. It scared them and they wanted Moses to intercede.
Tell us all that the LORD our God says to you, and we will hear and do it: Israel was perhaps too confident in their ability to obey God, they had a desire to do what God said. God was pleased with their response. They took God seriously.
Our lives are messy, and we often think of God as distant. We love Him but keep him out of the dark corners. And yet we want His promises of good. As Christians we are in a covenant relationship with God. A covenant involves promises and commitments.
Our response to life should be one of devotion to God and His word.
Deuteronomy 6 – Committed (relevant)
God’s commandments were not only to know, but to obey. That your days may be prolonged.
The Lord told them to love Him with all their heart, soul, and mind. The Israelites remembered the sign that God had done for them and commanded for them to teach them to their children.
“God’s testimonies must be taught to our children, and the utmost diligence must be used to make them understand them. This is a most difficult task; and it requires much patience, much prudence, much judgment….(Clarke)
Psalm 78 talks about what happens when we don’t teach our children the wonderous works of God.
We are to love and obey God even when it is uncomfortable or hard. If you love me obey my commandments John 14:15
We should hear and obey because He is a holy God.
Deuteronomy 7 – Chosen (ready)
9-….. He is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments.
16-You must destroy all the peoples the Lord your God gives over to you. Do not look on them with pity and do not serve their gods, for that will be a snare to you.
They were (we are) to drive out all the inhabitants and show no mercy! We are to be set apart. Light has nothing to do with darkness.
As believers, we should seek to conquer and destroy whatever robs us of our spiritual inheritance.
