R³ Devotional - Day 1

R³ Devotional - Day 1 from Genesis 3

By: Jose Maldonado

Genesis 3 presents what is often referred to as "The Fall." This chapter holds deep insights into human nature, our relationship with God, and the consequences of our choices. Let’s explore this passage through three points: Real: life principles, Relevant: life applications, and Ready: life action steps.
Real: Life Principles

  • The Nature of Temptation: In Genesis 3, we see how temptation can be subtle and alluring. The serpent deceived Eve by questioning God’s command causing doubt and second-guessing. The serpent promised wisdom and enlightenment through disobedience. This is the deceptive nature of temptation, which often presents itself as fun, beneficial, or harmless.

  • The consequences of disobedience: The decision to eat the forbidden fruit leads to immediate and long-lasting consequences that are still in effect including blame-shifting, shame, fear, and separation from God. This illustrates the principle that actions contrary to God’s commands can have profound and far-reaching effects.

  • The justice and mercy of God. Despite their disobedience, God seeks out Adam and Eve, demonstrating His desire for a relationship and offering a promise of redemption. This reflects God's justice in addressing sin, but also His mercy in providing a way back to Him.
Relevant: Life Applications

  • We need to recognize temptation in our lives. We face daily temptations that challenge our integrity and faithfulness. Identifying and understanding these temptations helps us to stand firm in our convictions.

  • We need to understand the impact of our choices. Our decisions can affect our lives and the lives of others. It is important to consider the potential consequences of our actions and strive to make choices that align with our values and God’s will.

  • We need to embrace God's grace. Even when we fall short, God offers us grace and redemption. Acknowledging our sins, and mistakes and seeking His forgiveness allows us to grow and deepen our relationship with Him.

Ready: Life Action Steps

  • Commit to these daily devotions. Set aside time each day for reflection and prayer, asking God for strength and wisdom to recognize and resist temptation.

  • Commit to daily communion with God that includes meditation, prayer, worship, thanksgiving, and praise.

  • Commit to having accountability and community: Engage with ABC or find an accountability partner who can provide support and guidance in making godly choices.

  • Commit to study scripture in a Life Group. On campus or off. Regularly read and study the Bible to better understand God’s principles and apply them to your life. This will help you discern truth from deception and make informed decisions.

  • Cultivate gratitude for the victory we have in Jesus.

By focusing on these principles, applications, and action steps, Genesis 3 becomes more than a story—it becomes a guide for navigating the moral and spiritual challenges we face each day.
