R³ Devotional - Day 78

R³ Devotional - Day 78 from Deuteronomy Chapters 24-27

By: Becky Childress

Some very practical day to day biblical principles are lined out in the chapters before us today.  Why did Boaz instruct his workers to leave grain for Ruth in the field?  Deut. Chapter 24 holds the beginning to that story!  If a husband dies, who should his wife marry? Chapter 25 is was a good resource for people of that time.  Wondering how much you should tithe on your income?  Chapter 26 is for you!    God’s people had laws spelled out in great detail that helped them structure their society in the way He wanted it done.

Real:  Life principles- What truths or principles are found in this passage?

These passages show us how to treat workers, how to treat each other, and how to handle our own finances.  One of my favorite concepts is found in Deut 24:19-22.   It says:

19 When you are harvesting in your field and you overlook a sheaf, do not go back to get it. Leave it for the foreigner, the fatherless, and the widow, so that the Lord your God may bless you in all the work of your hands. 20 When you beat the olives from your trees, do not go over the branches a second time. Leave what remains for the foreigner, the fatherless and the widow. 21 When you harvest the grapes in your vineyard, do not go over the vines again. Leave what remains for the foreigner, the fatherless and the widow. 22 Remember that you were slaves in Egypt. That is why I command you to do this.

Sound familiar?  The beautiful story of Ruth and Boaz has its roots in this chapter.  Boaz instructed his workers to leave extra grain for Ruth to gather for her and Naomi.  This kindness was part of the law, although Boaz carried it even further.  God tells them to “remember that you were slaves in Egypt”.  He provided for them then and they are to pass that type of kindness along.

Relevant:  Life Applications- How can this be applied?

The real life application of tithing is also explained in these passages.  By giving God the first of our income/ talents/ time, we obey this law and can receive God’s blessings from that.  Is this something you are currently practicing in your family?  Involving our children in this sets up the standard in their young minds for how God would have them live too.  Encouraging them to set aside 10% of their allowance or monies earned to give back to God is a wonderful way to set them up for this lifelong habit.

Ready:  Life Actions- How will you apply this?

Pray that God will show you His truths for today in these passages. God has a design for our lives and many of those details can be found in these 4 chapters.  Pray and ask God what He has for you here.  Be blessed!
