R³ Devotional - Day 89
R³ Devotional - Day 89 Judges Chapters 1-2
By: Daniel Arguijo
The Book of Judges is known for being one of the darkest periods for the people of Israel. Chapter 1 starts with the people of Israel continuing their conquest after Joshua’s death. They were still faithful and obedient to God’s commands to go and take their land.
But, as we keep reading in chapter 1, the people of Israel started to fail in the conquest. Starting with verse 27, we see that the Israelites were not driving out all the people for the land. Instead, they left them on the land and had them do forced labor. Someone might say that was a nice thing from the Israelites; these people will still have somewhere to live, but that was not God’s orders.
Chapter 2 clears this up for us, in verse 2 the Angel of the Lord tells them “you shall not make no covenant with the inhabitants of this land; you shall break their altars. But you have not obeyed my voice.”
God knew what would happen if they made a pact with the pagan nations that were in their land. The people of Israel would be influenced by them, and start to do all the things the pagans did that would not be approved by God.
This is where this dark period begins and the continuous pattern we see in the whole Old Testament. The people of Israel fall from God, they get the consequences for their decisions, then they cry out to God to be saved, and then God sends a deliverer. That is exactly what the word Judge in this context means, a deliverer. God sent these Judges to save them from the hands of their oppressors, and from now on we will see how God used them for his glory.

Real: Life Principles
- The people of Israel failed to obey the word of God. This brought negative consequences to their lives. Despite being unfaithful to God, God is always faithful to his people
- God always has a plan to deliver his people, he sent Judges for the people of Israel at that time, but the most important deliverer was yet to come.
Relevant: Life Applications
- We have to realize that our sins bring consequences in our lives, but even though we are unfaithful we have a faithful God that hears the cry of his own.
- Christ is our deliverer. He is the savior who paid the price for our sins once and for all. God had always a plan to save and redeem us.
Ready: Life Action Steps
- Having a faithful and forgiving God does not give us a license to sin. We must pursue holiness in our lives and obey the one who has always been there for us.
- One more time, Christ is our deliverer, and he is here for you today. Take him today as your savior if you haven’t, and if you have, share with others how he has delivered you.
