R³ Devotional - Day 94

R³ Devotional - Day 94 Judges Chapters 13-15

By: Justin McCoy

One of my favorite Bible stories begins here! Samson, a chosen one, a flawed one, but a very useful and impactful one! Isn’t it amazing how God uses the broken for some of His grandest plans. That should give us comfort as believers that no matter what we’ve done, once we accept the free gift of Grace and begin living for God, amazing things can happen for His plans and purposes.

Chapter 13 tells the story of divine intervention with a couple that were visited by an angel of the Lord to inform them of His plans for a child to be born. At the end of the chapter, after some back and forth with the angel, Manoah (Samson’s father) and his wife, who is not named, we meet Samson, a chosen judge for God who is to live under a Nazarite vow. I do find it quite funny that the directions given to his mother for the pregnancy are a pretty good prescription for having a healthy child!

Chapter 14 shows us Samson’s tendency towards worldly ways as he seeks and gets a wife of the Philistines, after which all kinds of troubles ensue. Yet, in those troubles, we see how the spirit of God comes upon Samson to give him “superhuman” strength and endurance.

As we move into Chapter 15, we see Samson in even more struggles, especially with the Philistines. Samson, with the help of the Spirit of the Lord (and the jawbone of a donkey) defeated 1000 men in one battle. After this, being thirsty, the Lord brought forth water for Samson from “the hollow place” to refresh his spirit.

Real Life Principles:  We may not all end up being a Samson, however God does choose us to work His plans. As believers, we must learn to trust His plans and obey His will. We find that best by diligent prayer and serving Him.

Relevant Life Applications:  What’s your calling? Are you representing God, His Plans, and His love where He has you? Ministry is not just in the Church; we must take it to all aspects of our lives. After all, He is the One who has us where we are, at this time, in this place, for His reasons. Be bold…Samson was!

Being Ready with Life Action Steps:  When God “speaks” to you, please listen. It may not be audible; it could just be an unexpected, opened door, or a chance encounter. Take those opportunities and do His will. Even if you are uncomfortable, remember His Holy Spirit is inside you to guide you through… surrender and let Him work through you.
