R³ Devotional - Day 289 - Matthew 10:16, 29-31
By: Anderson Baptist Church
"Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves; so be shrewd as serpents and innocent as doves... Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Therefore do not fear; you are of more value than many sparrows."
The Great Contradiction:
In Matthew 10, Jesus commissions His disciples for a great mission. He does not sugarcoat the reality of their task; He tells them they are "sheep among wolves." This sounds terrifying! But immediately following this warning, He gives them the secret to surviving and thriving in a hostile world. He gives them both a strategy for engagement and confidence for endurance.
Real Life Principle: Engage the World with Wisdom and Purity
“So be shrewd as serpents and innocent as doves” (Matthew 10:16)
This verse instructs us to hold two seemingly contradictory qualities in perfect tension.
Real-Life Application:
In our daily lives—at work, in the neighborhood, and online—we can practice this principle by:
Jesus repeats the command "Do not fear" multiple times in this chapter. He acknowledges that we will face things that threaten our comfort, reputation, and even our safety. To combat this fear, He points us not to our own strength, but to God's detailed, intimate knowledge of our lives.
When fear tries to paralyze your spiritual life, fight back with this promise:
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you for sending us out with both a mission and a promise. Give us the wisdom to be shrewd as serpents and the purity to be innocent as doves. When the world feels like wolves, remind us that we are precious to you, worth more than many sparrows. Help us to conquer fear with the knowledge of your perfect love and detailed care. In Jesus' name, Amen.
- Shrewd as Serpents (Wisdom/Strategy): This means being alert, thoughtful, discerning, and strategic in how we share our faith and conduct ourselves. We must understand the culture, anticipate challenges, and not walk blindly into danger or waste time on fruitless arguments. It is the intelligence to know when to speak, how to approach a conversation, and where to direct our efforts.
- Innocent as Doves (Purity/Integrity): This means maintaining a pure heart, an honest intention, and an uncorrupted character. Our motives must always be love, and our actions must be above reproach. We are to be simple, harmless, and gentle, ensuring our message is never undermined by our own moral failure or tricky methods.
Real-Life Application:
In our daily lives—at work, in the neighborhood, and online—we can practice this principle by:
- Guarding your online presence: Be shrewd about the information you share and how you engage in divisive conversations, but always remain innocent by speaking truthfully and with kindness, refusing to participate in gossip or slander.
- Discernment in conversations: When a friend or co-worker brings up a spiritual topic, be shrewd enough to listen well, ask thoughtful questions, and identify the real need behind their words. Don't simply launch into a generic response. Be innocent by ensuring your response is genuinely helpful and not a performance to prove you are "right."
- Conquer Fear with the Value of Your Soul Scripture: “Therefore do not fear; you are of more value than many sparrows.” (Matthew 10:31)
Jesus repeats the command "Do not fear" multiple times in this chapter. He acknowledges that we will face things that threaten our comfort, reputation, and even our safety. To combat this fear, He points us not to our own strength, but to God's detailed, intimate knowledge of our lives.
- God’s Providence is Total: Jesus uses the example of a cheap sparrow (v. 29) and the number of hairs on your head (v. 30) to show that nothing in your life happens outside of your Father's knowledge and permission. If God cares that much about a tiny bird, how much more does He care about you?
- Your Value is Immeasurable: The reason for this care is simple: you are "of more value than many sparrows." Your worth is not based on your achievements or performance, but on your identity as God’s beloved child. This means that no earthly threat—no financial loss, no relational conflict, and no persecution—can strip you of the one thing that truly matters: your standing with God.
When fear tries to paralyze your spiritual life, fight back with this promise:
- When worry about the future strikes: Remember that the God who manages the death of every sparrow is already managing your bills, your health, and your relationships. Instead of rehearsing your worries, practice acknowledging your fears to God and resting in His meticulous providence.
- When speaking the truth is scary: The fear of rejection or confrontation is a "wolf" that silences many "sheep." Remember that the worst a person can do is harm your body, not your soul (v. 28). Use your unique value in God's eyes as the fuel to speak courageously. The Father who values you will equip you with the words you need (v. 20).
