R³ Devotional - Day 288
R³ Devotional - Day 288 - Mark 4
By: Anderson Baptist Church
In Mark chapter 4, we see several well known parables. This devotional is going to focus on the story of Jesus calming the storm at the end of the chapter. After a long day of teaching by the Sea of Galilee, Jesus tells His disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” They take Him in the boat, and other boats follow. As they sail, a fierce storm arises — strong winds and waves begin to swamp the boat. The disciples panic, fearing for their lives, while Jesus is asleep on a cushion in the stern. In desperation, they wake Him and say, “Teacher, don’t You care if we drown?” Jesus gets up, rebukes the wind, and says to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” Immediately, the wind ceases, and there is a great calm. Then Jesus turns to His disciples and asks, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith? The disciples are filled with awe and say to one another, “Who is this, that even the wind and the waves obey Him?”
Real life principles:
Just because there are storms, doesn’t mean Jesus has left you - even though the disciples were exactly where Jesus told them to be, they still faced a violent storm. Following Jesus doesn’t mean we’ll never be in a storm. It means He will be in the storm with us.
Jesus cares, even when He’s silent - the disciples panicked and believed Jesus didn’t care because He was sleeping, when in reality God's silence is not absence. We have to rely on God's peace and not our own control.
Relevant life applications:
Don’t abandon the Journey - Jesus said they were going to the other side, so His word guaranteed they would make it, despite any storm they may face, they were going to make it. Anchor your faith in Jesus! - When facing trials or storms, remember Jesus is in the boat with you!
Ready action steps:
Encourage someone in the middle of a storm - share your own testimonies as examples of a time when Jesus calmed a storm for you.
Turn to prayer during storms - when facing storms, we often try to fix everything ourselves, but we are called to trust God in all things. Be ready to accept the peace from the Holly Spirit when we pray through our storms.
