R³ Devotional - Day 155

R³ Devotional - Day 155 - Proverbs 4-6

By: Justin McCoy

Stop for just one moment and think about what the world around us considers wisdom. High IQ’s, College Degrees, Great Philosophers, Scientists. And yet, nowhere, outside of a community of believers, does wisdom have any consideration of knowledge of God’s Word! It is a sad state to be in folks, and yet here we are. What is worse, you say? Maybe it is the fact that many believers fail to spend time in God’s Word, praying, asking for knowledge, and then consuming what He has clearly inspired to be written down for us through generations!

In our study of Proverbs for today, we clearly see how the wisdom God wants us to have is tasked to be passed from father to children, how we are to lead our families in the wisdom taught to us in the Bible, and the true consequences of falling short of God’s expectations.

We are born with a sinful nature, and the only way to understand that is to understand God’s expectations. It is a very rhetorical question to ask, “Where do we find that?”

Like it or not, as a father, I have been tasked by God with gaining understanding and wisdom in His Word and then teaching that to my family and those around me. Friends, that is not because I am a minister, a Bible teacher, or a preacher…it is because I am a believer. I, and many others I know have stayed silent way too long…afraid of the consequences of speaking God’s truth from His Word. And just look at where we are as a country because of that now.

Chapter 4, Wisdom and how it is gained and passed along, Chapter 5, warnings against the sin of adultery, and Chapter 6, practical warnings, are the headings of the chapters we covered for this devotional.  These are all teachings of Solomon (God-inspired). The same Solomon that pretty much tried every way of worldly living, only to settle on God’s way as the best. I shudder to think of the magnitude of impact we could have in one generation if all believers stood up, stood firm on God’s Word, passed it to the next generation, and did not yield to the ways of this world…can you just imagine that! Are y’all ready?

Real Life Principles:  What we need to truly make an impact in this world, in our families, and in our workplaces, is all spelled out clearly in God’s Holy Word. Get into it, daily! Pray before reading for God to impart wisdom into you heart as you read.

Relevant Life Applications: We will not find a problem in our lives that scripture does not have an answer for. We must treat God’s Word as it was meant to be. A God-breathed love story of His creation, our faults, and His plan to bring us back to Him. Quit making excuses for not reading your Bible. I made them for 41 years and my life, my family, and many of my friends suffered in some way as a result.

Being Ready with Life Action Steps:  Make a commitment to get into God’s Word daily. Do not just do it alone, involve your spouse, your siblings, your friends. Pray before you read, asking God to open your heart and mind to what He has to speak to you. Put His Word into action.  I have lost count of how many “successful” people I have met using God’s timeless truths from His Word whether wittingly or unwittingly. The good I have seen many of them be able to do is a powerful testimony. Also consider those with very little who understand God’s Word and give willingly of their time and energy…their impact is profound!
