R³ Devotional - Day 114 Psalm 85
By: Lee Dye
How many times will the Lord forgive you? How many times HAS the Lord forgiven you?
When I worked in the Water Works business, we had to collect water samples and test for a bacteria called coliform. If there was a bad sample, due to collecting it wrong or accidental contamination, the lab would send a report back requesting a re-sample, and the report would be stamped “TMTC”: Too Many To Count (coliforms).
After 430 years, God set the Israelites free from Egypt (Exodus 12:43). He promised them freedom and a promised land. The Journey would be long, but necessary to relearn God’s Laws and rekindle their relationship with God. But, impatience, selfishness, greed, would constantly get in the way.
Real Life Principles:
TEN times it is recorded; God had to forgive the Israelites on this journey.
(1) Lacking faith before the crossing of the Red Sea (Exodus 14:11–12)
(2) Complaining over the bitter water at Marah (Exodus 15:24)
(3) Complaining in the Desert of Sin (Exodus 16:3)
(4) Collecting more manna than they were supposed to (Exodus 16:20)
(5) Attempting to collect manna on the Sabbath (Exodus 16:27–29)
(6) Complaining over the lack of water at Rephidim (Exodus 17:2–3)
(7) Engaging in idolatry in the golden calf incident (Exodus 32:7–10)
(8) Complaining at Taberah (Numbers 11:1–2)
(9) Complaining over the lack of food (Numbers 11:4)
(10) Failing to trust God and enter the Promised Land (Numbers 14:1–4)
Relevant life application:
In Psalms 85, we find the words of the Psalmist recognizing the forgiveness of the Lord. In verses 1-4, he speaks of restoration, forgiveness, covering of sins, and God “withdrawing” is wrath from His people.
In verses 4-7, he’s asking for restoration, begging God not to be angry with us. Asking God to REVIVE us, so we can Rejoice in HIM.
And Verse 8, sums it up: “Let me hear what God the Lord will speak, for he will speak peace to his people, to his saints; but let them not turn back to folly”.
Ready action steps:
HEAR what GOD speaks: When we repent, He is ready to forgive and restore. As many times as needed.
