R³ Devotional - Day 106

R³ Devotional - Day 106 Psalm 56, 120, 140, 141, & 142

  Prayers of David:

We can learn a lot by reading the Psalms that David wrote. His examples of prayer, praise, and thanksgiving are what made him a man after God’s own heart. He sought the Lord about everything. David told Him the good, the bad, and the ugly. He entreated the Lord. He asked questions. He begged for help. But, he also kept the perspective that God is holy, and worthy of praise, no matter what was going on in his life.

These are PRINCIPLES that should guide us in living our Christian life.

Psalm 56: 3-4 states, “ But when I am afraid, I put my trust in you. O God, I praise your word. I trust in God, so why should I be afraid? What can mere mortals do to me?”
“On the very day I call to you for help, my enemies will retreat. By this I will know that God is on my side. O God, I praise your word. Yes, Lord, I praise your word.”, verses 9-10.

Praising the Lord and trusting Him are foundations of what it means to be a Christ follower.

It’s how we are RELEVANT to nonbelievers.

We’ve all had days like this….“ I call on the Lord in my distress, and he answers me. Save me O Lord, from lying lips and from deceitful tongues.” Psalm 120:1-2. We can talk to our God about anything & he hears us. What a privilege to come before the Father. It’s amazing that he cares so much that He would listen!

Take ACTION and meditate on that when you are feeling discouraged.

David expresses his fears to God in Psalm 140. We can, too. We can pray to the Lord about our fears because admitting them can bring glory & honor to God as He works things out in our lives.

 It shows we are REAL.

“Set a guard over my mouth O Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips. Let not my heart be drawn to what is evil, to take part in wicked deeds with men who are evildoers; let me not eat of their delicacies” Psalm 141:3-4.  Don’t you just love the imagery David uses?  It’s a great reminder that a door can close as well as open. Guarding the doors of our lips from the evil delicacies of this world is a temptation we Christians face daily.

Knowing to pray to the Lord about this keeps us READY to advance the Kingdom of our God.

Psalm 142 is a prayer for powerful deliverance when one is alone, powerless, & without protection. David is petitioning the Lord in verse 5 saying, “I cry to you O Lord; I say, ‘You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living.’” It’s reassuring that Jesus cares about all aspects of our life. We can APPLY what we’ve learned from David by praising the LORD, by praying to Him, by reading His word everyday. This is how we stay REAL, RELEVANT, and READY to share Christ with an unbelieving world.
