R³ Devotional - Day 103
R³ Devotional - Day 103 1 Samuel Chapters 18-20
By: Carole Rinehart
These chapters offer lessons about loyalty, friendship, and the dangers of jealousy and pride. Totally applicable to our lives.
Real Life Principles.
Friendship and loyalty:
The story of David and Jonathan serves as a powerful model of true friendship, demonstrating the importance of loyalty and trust in relationships.
Jonathan told David hard things, things that were awkward; things David didn’t want to hear. And that’s because Jonathan wasn’t trying just to keep the peace or make David feel good; he was trying to save David's life.
A true friend thinks about your safety and your well-being more than they do their comfort. They are committed to telling you the truth even when it hurts.
Biblical friendship is intentional. It involves commitment. To be engaged in each other’s lives even when it’s not easy and to speak truth in love.
Jealousy & Pride:
Saul was the first King of Israel, and he messed up so badly, that the kingdom was ripped away from his family forever (1 Sam 13:13-14). Think about that for a minute. We know that Jesus will one day sit on the throne of Israel. Saul’s sin kept him from being part of that lineage. Tragic.
It is easy for us to judge Saul. He was prideful, vengeful, and disobedient.
I can relate, can you?
Saul didn’t start off trying to be evil. The bible says that He was trying to please The Lord. Saul thought The Lord would be honored by good intentions. The Lord wanted obedience.
Relevant Life Applications:
Don’t fall into the trap of thinking that doing good things for God means your relationship with God is in a good place.
Sometimes we have the best of intentions, but those intentions can get us into big trouble. So how can we walk in obedience to The Lord?
Ready Action Steps.
We live in a time (especially in America) where we have access to the Bible…like no other time in all of history. He expects us to read it.
We should read our Bibles, examine ourselves, seek truth, repent, and then walk in obedience with The Lord.
