R³ Devotional - Day 133

R³ Devotional - Day 133 2 Samuel Chapters 11-12

By: Carole Rinehart

Chapter 11 tells the story of David and his lust for Bathsheba. He then arranges to have her husband killed. The last sentence of this chapter ends with “But the Lord was displeased with what David had done”.

David's sin, beginning with adultery, led to several other sins, including murder and the breakdown of his family.

In many instances, if not all instances, our effort to cover up our sins only compound our problems.

Chapter 12 begins with The Lord sending Nathan to confront David. Nathan announced a series of curses that would fall on David’s house because of his evil.

     (1) “The sword would never depart” from David’s house. His family would constantly be engaged in fighting.

     (2) Other men would have relations with David’s wives, and it would be known publicly throughout Israel.

     (3) The child born to David and Bathsheba would die (2 Sam 11:5).

David's sin not only affected him but also Bathsheba, Uriah, and their families. This underscores the fact that sin can have far-reaching consequences, impacting not just individuals but entire communities.

Be mindful of how your actions and words affect others and strive to live in a way that honors God and brings blessings to those around you.

When confronted, David didn’t make excuses, he didn’t try to justify himself, he didn’t lash out at Nathan for rebuking him, he humbled himself and acknowledged his mistake.

David's repentance is key here, genuine sorrow for his sin, and his desire to turn back to God. This emphasizes the importance of acknowledging our sins and seeking forgiveness.

Blessings,
Carole
