R³ Devotional - Day 125

R³ Devotional - Day 125 Psalms 23

By: Michael Serres

Psalms 23 is one of the most popular psalms, the one that is quoted frequently due to its comforting imagery of God as our shepherd. For many the imagery allows us to walk through the scene David put before us. A scene of tranquility such as green pastures and still waters. When feeling anxious or unrest  this is the psalm to turn to. The psalm is simple but offers solace in times of hardship and celebrates Gods unwavering love. Psalms 23 is often used at both weddings and funerals making it a psalm for all occasions. Its message about Gods love, care and provision make it comforting for all who read it.

Psalms 23 is written by David who expresses his deep faith in Gods provision, protection, presence and guidance. It uses the imagery of a shepherd and lambs to show us Gods love and guidance.

Real Life Principles

Gods Presence: David makes one of the most intimate metaphors we see in psalms at this point. Shepherds were known to live with their flock and is everything to the flock. The shepherds guide them, protect them and keep them alive.

Gods Provisions: The psalm highlights the God provides for his people both materially and spiritually. It encourages us to trust in God in all things and know that God is sufficient. Like a shepherd, God is always with us and provides everything for us.

Dwelling in Gods House: Psalm 23 finishes by speaking of dwelling in God's house forever, which can be interpreted as both a physical dwelling in heaven and a spiritual dwelling in God's presence on earth. This encourages us to grow in our relationship with God and to live in a way that honors Him and brings glory to His name.

Relevant Life Application:

Trust in Gods Leadership:UIt reminds us to trust God as our shepherd, in the good times and the bad. When the world puts hard times before you, trust that God is always with you.

Build our relationship with God: This psalm shows us what our relationship with God should look like. He is always with us, in every aspect of our lives, our relationship should be one of love and trust.

Find Comfort in God: During our hardest trials, we should look to God to find comfort that he  will “lead me beside still waters”.

Ready Life Steps:

Recognize God as your Shepherd: Accepting God as your shepherd means placing your trust in Him for all things.

Seek His Guidance: Verse 3 tells us “He leads me in paths of righteousness”. We have to be open to his direction.
