APPLICATION: Read & watch/listen to Matthew 26
Sermon: Rise With Me

I. Context:
A. Time:

B. Location:
1. Jerusalem
2. The Route to Gethsemane: The Brook of Kidron, also known as the Kidron Valley, is a valley located east of Jerusalem, between the city and the Mount of Olives. It's a significant location in the Bible, mentioned in both the Old and New Testaments, often associated with sorrow, betrayal, and judgment. John 18.1.
3. The Place: The Garden of Gethsemane is a garden at the foot of the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem, known for its significance in the Christian faith as the place where Jesus prayed before his arrest. It is also the site where Jesus experienced the "Agony in the Garden". The name "Gethsemane" is derived from the Hebrew "gat shemanim," meaning "oil presses," suggesting the presence of olive trees and an area for pressing oil.

C. Characters:
The Father, Jesus, the disciples, excluding Judas Iscariot (more particular: Peter, James and John: sons of Zebedee.

D. Background: After the “Last Supper” and just before the arrest of Jesus

E. Cross reference: John 18.1-2, Luke 22.44, Mark 14.34

F. Theme:

G. Title: HOW TO STAY ON MISSION!

II. 3 Major Points:
RECOGNIZE THE BATTLE FIELD, RENEW IN A BATTLE CRY, REMEMBER TO STAY ON MISSION.

A. Recognize the Battlefield: vv36-38
This is a “MENTAL and PHYSICAL” Battlefield of:
Separation, Sacrifice, and Sorrow.
Have you ever found yourself saying how did I get myself into this mess? How did I miss all the signs. The disciples did that very thing,

1. Separation:  The disciples are with him physically, but Jesus just informed the disciples after Passover Supper there would be a Betray, ALL Falling away, and Denial. This was the “The inner circle.”

a. Do you think the disciples recognized the battlefield? NO, their actions speak louder than their words.

b. Jesus even warned them by His words what was coming. Their response from Matt. 26: 33-35 were, I will never fall away, never disown you or never leave you. Do you think they were overconfident. (How many times have you heard the voice inside to avoid a situation, but you feel you must do something, and it blows up in your face.)

c. After the crucifixion, they went hiding, denying, and disbelief. They were caught off guard because they did not take heed to the word of God. Some battles can be avoided by knowing the word.
d.Application: Jesus was alone mentally because His closest were not Intune with God’s word.

2. Sacrifices: It’s not only been a long day, but it’s late in the evening maybe around 9pmish as they make their way to Gethsemane. John 18.1 says “Jesus went out with his disciples across the Brook Kidron where there was a garden.

a. Jesus would be leaving the city of Jerusalem entering the Valley of Kidron. The name Kidron “darkness” or “murkiness” of the water that periodically flows in that place
The Kidron Valley is technically a wadi, (dry creek) as a stream runs through it only after heavy rains. This location as the Name Kidron Valley is associated in the Bible with sorrow, judgment, and death.

For example, 2 Kings 23:1–6 describes King Josiah commanding “the high priest, the priests next in rank and the doorkeepers to remove from the temple of the Lord all the articles made for Baal and Asherah. Once removed from the temple, the idols were “burned . . . outside Jerusalem in the fields of the Kidron Valley” (verse 4). King Josiah did the same with the Asherah pole (verse 6). Similar reforms were accomplished by King Asa (A-za) and King Hezekiah, both of whom disposed of idols in the Kidron Valley (1 Kings 15:13; 2 Chronicles 29:16; 30:14).

b. As Jesus would cross the Brook Kidron and in the full moon (Paschal  Moon)of Nisan 14th (Ex 12.6 is Friday twilight) Passover the stream flowing red with sacrificial blood from the temple.

c. The Brook is in the Kidron Valley:

3. Sorrow: Surrounded by ancient olive trees, Gethsemane means “olive press.” There, olives from the neighborhood were crushed for their oil. The oil would be used typically for three things: food, light, and medicine.

B. Renew in the Battle Cry: vv39-44
The Battle Cry from Sorrow to Strengthening vv39-44
1. His Posture:
a .Prayer can be in any position, but this position reveals reverence and humility before the throne.

b.This was a crucial time for Jesus to draw strength from His Father, as He faced the burden of bearing the world’s sins.

2. His Pursuit:
a. He was not rebellion but requesting the strength to carry through it.
b. Jesus could have called on the Father to send more than 12 legions of Angles.
c. Jesus received strengthen from an angel Luke 22.43.

3. The Pressure: In Jewish history, olives were pressed three times. Some historical books state the grinding wheel would have added weight each press. The weight of the worlds sins brought sorrow (lypeisthai). To be grieved to the point of distress.

Dr. Luke (Luke) states from Luke 22.44 “and being in agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat became like drops of blood.”

Some believe this is an analogy, but on the Doctor who was inspired uses a medical term to describe his agony. This condition is called hematidrosis. (Hema toe dro sis). This is where the intense amount of mental stress becomes a physical condition of dilating the capillary blood vessels which then rupture and appear to be sweating blood.

4. His Persistence
a. He prayed three times
b. In the Garden of Gethsemane (Olive Press), Jesus was pressed with the extreme pressure of His suffering for all of us that His olive oil, that is, His blood oozed from His pores. When pressed with extreme pressure, olive oil oozes out of the pores of olives in blood red droplets.

C. Remember The Mission: vv45-46

1.“…Rest Latter…” He is not saying to rest, rather know what a priority
2.“…Rise now…”

Closing: The greatest Battle Cry was for you.

Do you not recognize the battlefield of the flesh: other words, pride, independence from God? Think about it, if you ever lied, it makes you a liar, if you ever taken anything without permission, even cut the day short from your job or cheated on a test, you’re a thief. God says this is sin, and all have sinned and come short of the Glory of God. The wage of sin is death. This means eternal separation from God into the outer place of darkness (qudar) hell.

The sorrow Jesus experienced you will experience as well for eternity without accepting Jesus. He cries for you, He was strengthen for you, Jesus faced death physical and spiritually for you by receiving:
1.Falsely accused trial
2.Mocked
3.Flogged
4.Made to carry his cross
5.Nailed
6.Died
7.Buried
8.Risen for you to accept him a the Lamb of God.
