R³ Devotional - Day 239

R³ Devotional - Day 239 - Ezekiel 3

By: Omar Rivera

“Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the people of Israel; so hear the word I speak and give them warning from me.” — Ezekiel 3:17 (NIV)

Reflection:

In Ezekiel 3, God commissions the prophet Ezekiel to serve as a “watchman” for the house of Israel. In ancient cities, a watchman had a vital role: to remain vigilant atop the city walls, to warn of approaching danger, and to protect the people through timely alerts. Similarly, Ezekiel’s mission was not rooted in comfort, approval, or personal success—it was about sharing God’s message, regardless of how the people responded.

Before this commission, God gave Ezekiel a powerful symbolic act. He instructed him to eat a scroll filled with His words (Ezekiel 3:1–3). The scroll was both sweet and bitter—sweet because God's Word brings life and purpose (even when those words are in loving discipline!), but bitter because the message often comes with the burden of rejection, judgment, and responsibility.

This chapter offers two vital spiritual truths:

1. God’s Word Must Be Consumed Before It Can Be Shared

Ezekiel had to eat the scroll before he could speak. This shows us that God's Word must first dwell richly in us. It needs to shape our hearts, minds, and lives before we attempt to share it with others. When we speak from a place of deep, personal relationship with Him and His word, our witness carries authentic power.

2. We Are Called to Share, Not to Convince

God held Ezekiel accountable for delivering the message—not for whether people accepted or rejected it. Our role is the same. We are called to share God’s truth in love, faithfully and courageously. The outcome belongs to God. We are responsible for obedience, not results.

Application: Living as God’s Watchman

  • Are you daily consuming God's Word?
You cannot pour out what has not first been poured in. Let God’s Word nourish and transform you before you attempt to speak it into others’ lives.

  • Who has God placed in your life to hear His message through you?
Are there family members, friends, coworkers, or neighbors who need to hear the hope of Christ? You may be the “watchman” God has appointed to sound the alarm in their lives—not to condemn, but to lovingly guide them toward truth.

  • Are you being faithful to your calling, regardless of how people respond?
Ask God for courage, compassion, and persistence. Let your role be defined by obedience, not outcomes.
