R³ Devotional - Day 222

R³ Devotional - Day 222 - Jeremiah Chapter 10

By: Anderson Baptist Church

Jeremiah 10 is a bold declaration of God’s unmatched sovereignty and a rebuke of idolatry that had infiltrated Israel.

Jeremiah 10:10 – “But the LORD is the true God; He is the living God and the everlasting King.”

Real Life Principles:
Reject Cultural Idolatry. “Do not learn the way of the nations…” (v.2) Faith must resist the pull of popular but ungodly customs.
Idols Are Man-Made and Powerless. “They cannot speak; they must be carried…” (v.5) Anything crafted by human hands cannot save or guide.
God Is Unique and Supreme. “There is none like You, O LORD…” (v.6). His greatness is unmatched by any earthly power.
True Wisdom Begins with Reverence. “Who should not fear You, O King of the nations?” (v.7). Reverence for God is the foundation of wisdom.

Relevant Life Applications:
Audit your influences: What cultural norms or habits subtly pull you away from God?
Recenter your worship: Is your faith anchored in the living God or in lifeless routines?
Surrender control: Let God direct your steps instead of relying on your own plans.

Ready Action Steps:
Discern what God is speaking to you in this chapter.

Bonus: Definition of the fear of the Lord from Jeremiah 10.
  • Reverential Awe:  This isn’t terror or dread—it’s deep respect, honor, and recognition of God’s unmatched authority and holiness. Jeremiah contrasts the living God with lifeless idols, emphasizing that only God is worthy of fear because He alone is sovereign.

  • Acknowledgment of God’s Kingship:  The phrase “King of the nations” highlights that God’s rule is universal, not just over Israel, but over all peoples and kingdoms. To fear Him is to submit to His reign above all earthly powers.

  • Response to His Unmatched Wisdom and Power:  Jeremiah points out that even the wisest among the nations cannot compare to God. This fear is rooted in recognizing that no human wisdom or idol can rival the Creator.

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom…” (Proverbs 9:10) — echoed here as a call to abandon foolish idols and embrace divine truth.
