R³ Devotional - Day 192

R³ Devotional - Day 192 - Amos Chapters 1-5

By: Kevin King

In the Book of Amos, we see that the children of God have turned their backs on God, and Amos is warning them to repent or they would be taken into exile.

Throughout chapters 1, 2, and 3 we see that the Israelites are no longer worshiping God, but they are practicing idol worship, immorality, sexual sin, and drunkenness.

They were getting the nazarites who were God's chosen men to be prophets that were forbidden to drink alcohol to participate in drinking alcohol. Amos chapter 2 verse 12.

This is one example of not only not walking with God but walking directly against God.

In Amos chapter 3 verse 10, God accuses Israel of storing up violence and Devastation in the citadels.

During this time the citadels were structures that represent wealth and power and strength, and the children of Israel are putting their faith in worldly power,  worldly riches and worldly strength.

In chapter 3, God reminds the Israelites that they are his chosen people, and because of the rebellion against him he is going to punish them, and they will not be able to escape it.

Throughout Amos, we see that God has warned his children repeatedly to turn from their sin and turn to him, but they would not repent. In chapter 4:9, he reminds them that he's already punished them once.

[9] “I smote you with scorching wind and mildew; And the caterpillar was devouring Your many gardens and vineyards, fig trees and olive trees; Yet you have not returned to Me,” declares the LORD.

Even though God has warned them multiple times and punished them multiple times.  They still did not repent, they still did not turn to the Lord and they were eventually taken into captivity.

The question we have to ask ourselves is, are we putting the things of the world before the things of the Lord? Are we repentant of the sin in our lives?

Can you examine your life and see that God is calling you to repentance, and see that God has given you warnings throughout your life to turn from sin to turn to him.

If we have unconfessed sin in our lives or sin that we continue to walk in, be quick to repent, be quick to turn from sin, be quick to get right with God.

God is merciful and God is patient but he does discipline those who he loves according to Hebrews 12:6

Hebrews 12:6
[6] For those whom the Lord loves He disciplines, And He scourges every son whom He receives.

If you have said yes to Jesus as your lord and savior.
Live as if he's your lord and savior
