R³ Devotional - Day 159

R³ Devotional - Day 159 - Proverbs 18

By: Micheal Serres

Proverbs 18 emphasizes the power of words and the importance of wisdom in speech and relationships. It warns that fools speak without understanding and stir up conflict, while wise individuals listen and speak with care. The chapter highlights that words can bring life or death, making thoughtful communication essential. It also stresses the value of seeking knowledge, being fair in judgment, and avoiding arrogance. True strength and security are found in trusting God, and deep, loyal friendships are more valuable than many superficial connections. Overall, the chapter encourages humility, discernment, and reliance on God and wise counsel.

Real Life Principals:

God is our Refuge: Verse 10 tells us “the name of the Lord is a strong tower, the righteous man runs into it and is safe”. Trusting in God and turning to God in all circumstances provides security and brings us peace. No matter what the obstacle is, God will guide us through it.

Pride Leads to destruction: “Before destruction a man’s heart is haughty, but humility comes before honor” verse 12. Pride/Haughty in out hearts will lead to destruction but being humble and bowing to the Lord will bring honor and keep us in the proper attitude to serve God.

Seek Understanding: “a fool takes no pleasure in understanding, but only in expressing his opinion” verse 2.  True wisdom values listening and understanding over speaking ones own mind.

Relevant Life Applications:

Think before you speak: “the tongue has the power of life and death..” verse 21. Speak with kindness and intention.  Avoid gossip and angry words. Before speaking, ask yourself, “will this build up or tear down”

Use Your Talents: “a mans gift makes room for him and brings him before the great” verse 16. We should develop our God given abilities and use them to serve others, Trusting that God will open the right doors for us.

Be Fair: “The one who states his case first seems right, until the other comes and examines him.” Verse 17. Before making a decision or taking sides, hear all perspectives.

Life Action Steps:

Pause before you speak: Before responding in conversation, take a breath and ask yourself: “is this helpful, true or kind?”

Humble yourself daily: Start each day with a short prayer asking God for wisdom and humility. Keep a journal of lessons learned from mistakes.

Develop and use your gifts: Identify one skill or talent God has given you. Set a goal to grow in it or use it to serve someone this week.
