R³ Devotional - Day 329 - Galatians 4
By: Anderson Baptist Church
Galatians 4:1-7 compares our former state to a minor heir who, though owning everything, is under the control of guardians and managers—essentially like a slave—until the time set by the father. Paul says we were similarly enslaved to the "elementary principles of the world" (Galatians 4:3), which can be interpreted as a life governed by the law, rules, or even worldly systems and false gods.
Real Life Principle:
Through faith in Christ, God has redeemed us from the slavery of trying to earn His approval and has adopted us as His own children and heirs. We are no longer defined by our performance, status, or adherence to an endless list of rules, but by our intimate relationship with the Father. The Holy Spirit confirms this by allowing us to cry out, "Abba, Father!" (Galatians 4:6), an Aramaic term for "Daddy," signifying a close, personal bond.
Relevant Applications:
Identity Shift: Stop defining your self-worth by your work, accomplishments, possessions, or even your failures. Your primary identity is now "child of God" and "heir" to His kingdom, which is a gift of grace, not a reward for effort.
Freedom from Performance: Recognize that a close relationship with God is not based on keeping a strict list of rules (religious legalism). You do not need to observe special religious days, seasons, or rituals to become right with God; you are already made right through Christ (Galatians 4:9-11). Worship and service flow from your secure identity as a child, not from the need to please a master.
Intimate Prayer: Because you have the Spirit of adoption, your prayer life should move from formal, distant requests to intimate conversation with your heavenly Father. You can approach Him with confidence, knowing He listens and cares like a loving parent.
Ready Action Steps:
Reflect and Reframe: Take five minutes today to write down a current source of anxiety or an area where you feel pressure to perform (e.g., job success, financial stability, being a "good" Christian). Next to it, write the truth from Galatians 4:7: "So you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God."
Practice "Abba": In your prayer time today, intentionally use the term "Abba, Father" to address God. Speak to Him about your concerns or joys with the simple, trusting intimacy a child has with a loving parent.
Evaluate Bondage: Identify one "elementary principle of the world" (a rule, standard, or expectation) that you feel is currently enslaving you—perhaps the need for constant validation or comparison with others. Choose to reject that lie by intentionally replacing it with a truth about your identity in Christ today.
