R³ Devotional - Day 326

R³ Devotional - Day 326 - James 1-5

By: Anderson Baptist Church

You may get a sense of Déjà vu when reading the book of James, especially since we just finished up our James Series – Real Faith, Real Life, which I strongly suggest you go back and listen to because it was so good!  James 1-5 teaches us the utmost importance of living out one’s faith through actions, not just with words.  Finding joy in trials, seeking wisdom from God, favoritism, and the untamable tongue, and not being a slave to the world and worldly desires are some of the lessons James is writing about and trying to teach us.

Facing our trials with joy – we are going to have trials, James is telling us to consider trials a source of joy, because it tests our faith and that testing can produce perseverance, which leads to spiritual maturity, and who doesn’t want to be spiritually mature?

Favoritism – Every parent/grandparent/aunt/uncle has probably been accused of having a favorite kid/grandkid/niece/nephew…better yet every person that cooks on a stove definitely has a favorite burner on said stove (it’s the bottom right one for me), and while James isn’t saying we can’t have a favorite burner on a stove, he does say that we shouldn’t show favoritism to the wealthy over the poor.  He states that favoritism is a sin and goes against God’s law of love!

The power of the tongue – If you put a bit in a horse’s mouth, you can control that horse, when you place a rudder on a ship, you can control that ship…these 2 examples are about controlling the tongue, putting a bit on that mouth of yours, because what happens we let our mouths get away from us?  The next example is a small spark can cause a great fire…if we let our mouths get away from us, it can set the whole forest ablaze!  We can also use our tongues to encourage others to be patient in trials, suffering, and to pray.

Real Life Principles:
Endure trials with joy and seek wisdom when you lack it, control your speech to build others up rather than tear them down, avoid favorites, guard against worldly desires that lead to spiritual adultery, stay humble my friends.

Relevant Life Applications:
True faith is demonstrated through consistent, faith-based actions and a humble, patient attitude, especially in difficult times.

Being Ready with Life Action Steps:
Face trials with joy, ask God for wisdom during hardship, and don’t just hear the word but put it into practice through deeds!
