R³ Devotional - Day 317

R³ Devotional - Day 317 - Luke 23

By: Carole Rinehart

This chapter is full of teachings. I chose to focus on the section of scripture where Jesus addresses the daughters of Jerusalem. Also, the forgiveness shown at the cross.

So far, Jesus has been on trial and sentenced to crucifixion. He has endured hatred from religious leaders, a sleepless night, being scourged and is now on a very public two mile walk.

It was on this walk that the compassion Christ had for humanity caused Him to stop along His road toward death and engaged the daughters of Jerusalem.

27 Now following Him was a large crowd of the people, and of women who were [k]mourning and grieving for Him. 28 But Jesus turned to them and said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, stop weeping for Me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. 29 For behold, days are coming when they will say, ‘Blessed are those who cannot bear, and the wombs that have not given birth, and the breasts that have not nursed.’ 30 Then they will begin to say to the mountains, ‘Fall on us,’ and to the hills, ‘Cover us.’ 31 For if they do these things [l]when the tree is green, what will happen [m]when it is dry?”

Jesus essentially told them, “Don’t weep for Me, weep for those who reject Me.” Weeping for Him was a thoughtless act for He was going to His death on behalf of sinful humankind and would be raised in glory three days later. Christ instructed the women not to weep for Him, but for themselves because of their ignorance of who He was.

Have you wept over your sin and ignorance in repentance or just felt sorry for Jesus?

God, help us to grieve our sinfulness and remember who Christ was and is and is to come.

33 And when they came to the place called [n]The Skull, there they crucified Him and the criminals, one on the right and the other on the left.

At this place called Calvary, Jesus died for our sins, and our salvation was accomplished. The cross is the only source of salvation and should be our joy.

34 [j]But Jesus was saying, “Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.”

Who exactly is Jesus praying for here? Forgive them for what?

Simply put, Jesus took pity on them. All of them who were involved in his unjust suffering and crucifixion. The heart of Jesus is on display here in all of its brilliance, the fact that Jesus cares for callous and cruel sinners, it is that fact that makes this prayer so powerful.

God, help us to be forgiving people. Help us care for other sinners.
