R³ Devotional - Day 315

R³ Devotional - Day 315 - John 14

By: Anderson Baptist Church

Finding Peace and Trust in Uncertainty

Jesus speaks to his disciples, whose hearts are troubled by the news of his impending departure. It is a powerful message of trust, comfort, and the promise of His presence even when things feel uncertain.

Real-Life Principle:
Trust is the Antidote to Anxiety.
Jesus establishes in John 14:1 is, "Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me." In the face of uncertainty—whether it's loss, a major life change, or fear of the future—our natural response is anxiety and a "troubled heart." Jesus offers a simple but radical remedy: trust.

You can actively choose to anchor your security and hope in Christ, rather than in volatile circumstances or your own limited strength. True peace isn't the absence of trouble, but the presence of God's trustworthiness in the midst of it.

Relevant Applications
  • When Facing Loss or Separation (John 14:2-3): Jesus promises a prepared "place" in his Father's house and that he will return. This applies to the ultimate future (heaven) and our present feelings of isolation.

  • Application: When you feel lonely or lost, remember your true, permanent home and acceptance are secured in Christ. You are not a spiritual orphan; you have a guaranteed future.

  • When Confused About Direction (John 14:6): Thomas asks how they can know the way, and Jesus replies, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life..."

  •   When you're confused about a major decision (career, relationship, move), the path is not a complex map, but a person. Focus on following Jesus's example and commands (the "way") and trusting his teaching (the "truth"), knowing he provides life.

  • When Feeling Inadequate (John 14:12, 16-17): Jesus says his followers will do "greater things" and promises the Holy Spirit as an Advocate/Helper.

  •  When you feel inadequate to handle a difficult task or to live a godly life, remember you don't do it alone. The Holy Spirit is your internal guide, strength, and counselor, making God's power accessible in your daily life.

Ready Action Steps
Redirect Your Trust (Daily Practice):
  • When you feel anxiety rising today (about work, family, or health), stop and say the first part of the verse aloud or in your mind: "Do not let your heart be troubled."

  • Immediately follow this by intentionally casting your worry onto Christ and reminding yourself, "I choose to believe in Him."

  • Connect Love to Action (Obedience Check):

  • Jesus said, "If you love me, you will keep my commands" (John 14:15). Identify one specific area in your life where your actions don't align with a known biblical command (e.g., forgiveness, kind speech, integrity).

  • Decide on a concrete step to bring that area into obedience this week, viewing it as an act of love toward Jesus.

  • Acknowledge the Helper (Spirit Awareness):

  • Before starting any demanding or uncertain task, pause for a moment and consciously invite the Holy Spirit into the situation. Pray something simple like: "Holy Spirit, Helper, give me wisdom/patience/courage for this." This shifts your reliance from self to Him.
