R³ Devotional - Day 292 - Matthew 15
By: Anderson Baptist Church
Matthew 15 addresses two key areas that define genuine faith: the contrast between human tradition and God's commandments (vv. 1-20), and the contrast between limited privilege and limitless faith (vv. 21-28). Jesus shifts the focus from outward religious practice to the inward condition of the heart, and from the boundaries of His initial ministry to the breadth of His compassion.
REAL LIFE Principle: True Defilement is Internal, Not External
Matthew 15:1-3, 8-11, 18-19
"Then Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem, saying, “Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat.” He answered them, “And why do you break the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition?”... ‘This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’... 'But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person. For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander.'"
The Pharisees were concerned with ritual purity, criticizing Jesus' disciples for not observing their complex rules about handwashing. Jesus immediately exposes their hypocrisy: they were so focused on human rules (tradition) that they found loopholes to bypass clear divine commands (like honoring their parents). He reveals that true defilement does not come from what goes into the body, but what comes out of the heart, which is the source of all evil.

REAL LIFE Principle: Great Faith Humbles Itself and Persists
Matthew 15:21-28
"And Jesus went away from there and withdrew to the district of Tyre and Sidon. And behold, a Canaanite woman from that region came out and was crying, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David; my daughter is severely oppressed by a demon.”... Jesus answered her, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” But she came and knelt before him, saying, “Lord, help me.”... Then Jesus answered her, “O woman, great is your faith! Be it done for you as you desire.” And her daughter was healed instantly."
Jesus' encounter with the Canaanite woman, a Gentile outsider, is a powerful lesson in persistent and humble faith. Despite Jesus' initial silence, the disciples' desire to dismiss her, and a seemingly harsh response that tests her (referring to her people as "dogs" compared to the "children" of Israel), her faith did not falter. She humbly accepted her place while simultaneously demonstrating her conviction that even a "crumb" of His power was enough. Her unwavering confidence earned Jesus' commendation: "O woman, great is your faith!"

RELEVANT Application:
- Conduct a "Heart Check": Jesus' teaching is a direct call to examine your heart. Stop focusing your spiritual energy on outward appearances, rituals, or comparing yourself to others. Instead, identify the evil thoughts, destructive words, or selfish motives that emerge from within. Confess these "heart sins" and ask the Holy Spirit to purify the core of your being.
- Prioritize Scripture over Tradition: Be on guard against elevating personal preferences, cultural norms, or even church traditions above the clear teaching of the Bible. When a tradition conflicts with a commandment of God (like showing honor and practical care for your family), always submit to God's written Word. True worship is obedience that flows from a heart close to God, not empty words and rituals.

Her unwavering confidence earned Jesus' commendation: "O woman, great is your faith!"
RELEVANT Application:
- Persevere in Prayer: Great faith is persistent faith. When your prayers seem to go unanswered, or you feel God is distant or silent, do not give up. Follow the Canaanite woman’s example: keep crying out to Jesus, acknowledge His authority ("Lord, help me"), and humbly persist until you receive an answer. The delay may be for your benefit, the benefit of others, or to allow your faith to be revealed as truly great.
- Embrace Humility: The woman's humility allowed her to turn an insult into an argument for mercy. She knew she had no claim on Jesus other than His compassion. Adopt this humble posture: acknowledge that you are unworthy of God's favor, yet rely completely on His boundless grace. Come to Jesus, recognizing your desperate need, and He will meet you with compassion that transcends all boundaries.
