R³ Devotional - Day 175 - 2 Chronicles 10
By: Lee Dye
Rehoboam was one of the Kings selected by Israel to rule. As the son of King Solomon, it was a natural selection. Israel had high hopes. As Rehoboam was selected, in 2 Chronicles 10:6, he appeared to do the right thing in seeking counsel “6Then King Rehoboam took counsel with the old men, who had stood before Solomon his father while he was yet alive, saying, “How do you advise me to answer this people?”.
He was given good counsel: 7And they said to him, “If you will be good to this people and please them and speak good words to them, then they will be your servants forever.” This was wise counsel from men who stood with King Solomon. Ah, but Rehoboam was the King now. He was going to RULE his way. He was going to be a mightier King than his father. King Rehoboam’s final response: 13And the king answered them harshly; and forsaking the counsel of the old men, 14King Rehoboam spoke to them according to the counsel of the young men, saying, “My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to it. My father disciplined you with whips, but I will discipline you with scorpions.”
It didn’t turn out well for Rehoboam. We find in 2 Chronicles 12, Egypt came up against Jerusalem where King Rehoboam was and took everything. Verse 5: “Thus says the Lord, ‘You abandoned me’”.
REAL - Life Principle: Don’t abandon God. We have a King that rules with Love, Grace, Compassion and Peace that cares for us.
“Are not two sparrows sold for a copper coin? And not one of them falls to the ground apart from your Father’s will. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.” Matthew 10:29-31
RELEVANT - Life Application: You seek wise counsel, then use that wise counsel
Proverbs 12:15 The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, But a wise man is he who listens to counsel.
READY – Action Steps: Where do we find wise counsel and instructions? God’s word – STUDY.
2 Timothy 3: 16All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for in righteousness, 17that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
