R³ Devotional - Day 151 - 1 Kings 3 & 4
By: Kathryn Haecker
Solomon's Wisdom:
Who doesn't want wisdom and discernment? In 1 Kings 3 & 4, we see King Solomon, David's son, who does not think very highly of himself, as we see in 1 Kings 3:7. He calls himself a little child even though he's not. King Solomon dreams a dream in which he asks God for wisdom because he understands the task at hand will require much wisdom. As we'll see later in the passage, God does indeed grant Solomon wisdom. But it made me ponder: at what point did God grant Solomon wisdom? I wondered this because it seems Solomon already has some level of wisdom by knowing that wisdom will be more valuable to him than wealth, fame, or victory over his enemies. Maybe God was growing his wisdom all along. We see that in 1 Kings 3:3, Solomon showed his love for the LORD by walking according to the instructions given to him by his father David. We know that when we walk according to the LORD's instructions, our lives will bear fruit. It appears the wisdom King Solomon obtained was immediate, but maybe not—maybe it was grown. Let's look at what we can learn from this for our own lives.
Real Life Principles:
God grants us wisdom and any other spiritual gift bestowed upon us. Are you waiting for that bolt of lightning to come down and make it true? Or do you realize that God may be giving you what you're asking for right now? Your life and the way you face it is being used by God to prune you. So are you following His instructions like Solomon did? Or do you need to get back on the path?
Relevant Life Applications:
Ask God for the needs in your life. He may be helping you grow what you need right now. When facing hardships or trials, don't just pout and ask God why He's putting you through this. Realize that He has a plan. His plan may simply be to help you learn something. Maybe he’s granting you wisdom.
Being Ready with Life Action Steps:
I asked: are you following His instructions like Solomon did? If I have to be honest with myself, I am not following the LORD's instructions like Solomon did. If you didn't catch it in our devotional by Tara Leigh Cobble or had heard it somewhere before, when we read the word "LORD" in the Bible and it's in all capital letters like that, we know it's actually a name—the name of Jesus. So in this section, Solomon was showing his love for the LORD (Jesus) by following instructions. Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. Our goal is to shape our own lives as best we can to look like His. I have to be honest: I don't always look much like Jesus. If you're honest too, your life might not look like it either. So be ready by modeling your life after Jesus'.
