R³ Devotional - Day 149
R³ Devotional - Day 149 1 Kings 2:1-4
I recall the day my dad first let me use his car. He gave the keys and said, “Son, be very careful, do not go out driving around like crazy, be wise who you let in the car, and do not let them influence you in your decisions.”
In 1 Kings 1 and 2, we see David’s last days. He is about to pass away, and in those last days, he appointed his son Solomon to be king of Israel. This was a great responsibility for Solomon, his Dad, who was the greatest King Israel ever had, is now giving the throne to his son.
And just as my dad gave me instructions for using his car, David gave Solomon some instructions so that he could be the King that the Lord wanted him to be. This is where I want us to focus today, chapter 2 vs 1-4.
In today’s world, we rarely see this type of advice from parents to their children. As the kids grow and face real-world situations in jobs, college, or wherever they take a new role, as parents, we focus on a worldly perspective as we give advice. Be professional, be respectful to others, do your job as best as you can, aspire to grow professionally, set goals, and fight for them.
And, as I am not opposed at all for us as parents to give this advice, we sometimes forget to go back to the basics, just as David advised Solomon as he goes into this new role. He said: “Keep the charge of the Lord your God, walking in his ways and keeping his statutes.” This is what it’s all about. Following his ways, trusting the Lord, and keeping his commandments. What great advice for a new stage in life.
Real: Life Principles
• God should be the number 1 priority in our lives. In everything we do, if we do not follow his ways and keep his commandments, we will be driven away from him.
• It is our responsibility as parents to witness and disciple our children. Let us show them with our example how to follow the Lord, so they can model that when they grow up.
Relevant: Life Applications
• We need to make God our priority. Reading his word, studying in depth the scriptures, fellowship with our brothers, and serving his kingdom.
• As parents, we must teach our Kids to love the Lord, to serve in the church, to share Christ with others. Let’s show them by example.
Ready: Life Action Steps
• Set a goal this week to prioritize God if you feel you haven’t done it. One example is: prioritize reading your bible as the first thing you do every morning. Set aside 30 minutes for it.
• Read the word and pray with your children this week. Share a brief testimony of how God has impacted your life through scriptures.
